 Sewing A Pumpkin

Sewing A Pumpkin

With Halloween coming soon, we have started making some Halloween crafts. Sammie really liked sewing her teddy bear, so I thought we would try another sewing craft. This time she will be sewing a pumpkin.

I cut out two identical pumpkin shapes from orange felt. Using a hole punch, I punched holes evenly around the edges of each piece, being very careful to line the holes up on both pieces. It would have been easier to punch both pieces at the same time, but my hole punch wasn’t strong enough to go through the double thickness.

I cut a fairly long piece of orange yarn for Sammie to use. I made Sammie a needle out of half of a pipe, folded in half around the yarn and twisted together. I got the idea for using a pipe cleaner as a needle from Teach Preschool

I started sewing a pumpkin for Sammie by tying the yarn to both pieces of felt and reminded her how to sew. This time I thought it might be easier and look neater to have Sammie sew the yarn over and under, rather than up one hole and down the next.

She only needed help for the first couple of holes and then she sat on the couch and sewed the remainder of the pumpkin.

I had her leave the last two hole open so that she could stuff her pumpkin. Once she had filled it full of stuffing, she sewed the last two holes closed. I tied the yarn and cut the extra yarn off. We tucked the little bit of a tail inside the pumpkin.

Sammie glued googly eyes and drew a mouth and nose onto her pumpkin.

Maddie decided that she wanted to sew a pumpkin as well. So I got another set ready for her. She made hers, but put a little too much stuffing in it. The stuffing started coming out around the holes and gaps, but it still looks so cute.

The girls had a lot of fun sewing a pumpkin. Sammie took hers to bed with her that night. :)
I can see us making lots more of these sewings projects. One for each season or maybe for no reason at all :)

I would really like to find a stronger hole punch though. I wonder if they make one specifically for fabric? If you know of any place that I can buy a stronger hole punch, please let me know :)
