Sand Art

Sand Art

I had bought some coloured sand and bottles from Oriental Trading for the girls to try out making sand art.
When the box arrived, the girls couldn’t wait to get started.
I poured some of each colour of sand into styrofoam cups, making it easier for them to pour it into the little funnels.

To make sand art, you will need some clear glass or plastic bottles, small funnels and a variety of coloured sand. Pour your sand into the bottles using the funnels. Once you have enough of one colour, pick another colour and continue until your bottle is full. How the sand is poured into the bottle and how it lands makes your design. If you wiggle the funnel around and make little hills and valleys with the sand, it looks really pretty once you add a few colours on top of it.

They had a great time deciding what colours to use and pouring it into the bottles.

Sammie had to use some of each colour and really liked using the black sand. Maddie made patterns with her sand.

With this awesome handy trick from Busy Kids=Happy Mom of putting some glue in the top and neck of the bottle, after finishing the sand design, the girls’ pretty art is safe from getting the sand all mixed together and wrecked.

I was very surprised at how little sand got spilled. I was expecting at least one of the cups to get knocked over, but they were very careful with them.

The girls had a lot of fun making these sand art bottles. I think they both would have kept making more of them, but they weren’t sure what they would do with them after. I suggested making them for gifts for their friends and that we could make special tags for them. So I think I might know what gifts they will be giving out for Christmas this year.

We have also tried making coloured salt with chalk to use in sand art. Hopefully I will get a post about that up soon.
